“We chose these artists because we felt they were up for the challenge of working collaboratively with other like-minded teams and individuals in an experimental and daring way. We also felt they would be inspired by the full potential that the Phi Centre offers. In pairing the teams together we asked each artist to provide statements that we then shared with everyone. Each artist gave input on who they wanted to work with based on the information that everyone provided. Once we had everyone’s ideas, we tried matching people with the partners we felt would inspire their work and lead to the most fruitful collaborations. Like most artistic processes, there is tremendous potential but also quite a bit of mystery. We’re hoping everyone takes the leap with us and is inspired to create something memorable and unique!”
- Dan Seligman, cofounder and Creative Director of POP Montreal
POP Montreal festival includes symposium discussions, artisan and visual art exhibitions, fashion shows, film screenings, and, of course, a few all-night parties. The POP Montreal International Music Festival is an annual not-for-profit curated cultural event that champions independence in the arts by presenting emerging and celebrated artistic talents from around the world.
POP Montreal also organizes over a hundred events year round, delivering a bold cross-section of art forms and events.
For musicians and artists, fans, curators, critics, record labels and industry, POP Montreal is the North American festival that provides a dynamic introduction to the next generation of musical talent and independent art forms.
In addition to scheduled events, the Phi Centre also invites guest curators to express their vision and champion an artist or artists whose work they admire.
Along with POP Montreal, six other guest curators have accepted the challenge:
• Xavier Dolan, filmmaker
• Godfrey Reggio, filmmaker
• Renata Morales, artist and fashion designer who held The 8-Day Week from June 5 to 12, 2013
• Suroosh Alvi, cofounder of Vice Media
• Denis Villeneuve, filmmaker
• Rad Hourani, designer, whose project Rad Hourani: Seamless took place from November 1 to 30, 2013
