This week on Chosen Family, Tranna and Thomas dive in deep. A discussion about religion and spirituality goes so far beyond when guest, brilliant filmmaker, Arshad Khan joins the table.

Arshad Khan has been touring the international film festival circuit with his acclaimed documentary, Abu, which tells the complicated story of his relationship with his father, set against his family’s migration from Pakistan to Canada. Arshad, Thomas, and Tranna discuss the film’s challenging themes—religion, sexuality, colonialism, identity, and family—in a charged, important, and riveting conversation. (Abu will be screened this Saturday as part of the Image+Nation film festival.)

Also featured in this episode is a performance by the hilarious Eman El-Husseini. Fun fact: Eman headlined the open mic where Tranna made her stand-up comedy debut! Eman is an accomplished comedian, touring all over North America. She now resides in New York City with her wife, fellow stand-up comedian, Jess Salomon. Their lives are now the subject of a new cartoon, The El-Salomons.

Rounding out the episode is a phone chat with writer/actor/performer/personality Jeffery Self! Tranna has waited a long time to talk to this captivating, talented person and the wait was worth it! Jeffery has just released his second YA novel, A Very, Very Bad Thing, which we think makes the perfect holiday gift for all the young (and old) readers in your life!

We’ve also got the exclusive premiere of Ghost Love’s new single, “Change Your Mind”! Listen. Enjoy. And share with your friends!

Chosen Family is a podcast created by rising comedy stars Thomas Leblanc and Tranna Wintour featuring conversations with special guests, storytelling and cultural commentary that shines a light on the importance of friendship, resistance and community. Presented and produced by Phi.
