Matko the gypsy lives off his traffics wirh Russian on the edge of the Danube. He needs money in order to realize an important scheming. He asks to Grga Pitic, gypsy community's godfather and old friend of the family, to finance him. Grga agrees but Matko isn't in position to fulfil his ambition and is overtaken by the dangerous Dadan. To pay his debt, Dadan suggests him to marry his son, Zare, with Ladybird, his little younger sister. But Zane is in love with another girl, the blonde Ida. The marriage happens. The bride takes advantage of an inattention moment and runs away.
