In Conversation with Michel Gondry is moderated by cultural TV host and reporter Herby Moreau and presented jointly with the Chromatic’s Home Movie Factory by Michel Gondry in Montreal, September 1 to October 15, 2017.

Michel Gondry is a brilliantly inventive French filmmaker. His singularly enigmatic imagination has drawn the biggest names in music—the Rolling Stones, Daft Punk, Björk, Kylie Minogue, and IAM are among those who’ve sought out the Gondry style in music videos that rise to the level of conceptual art. His achievements in feature film are every bit as impressive and include the likes of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, and Mood Indigo.

He is also influential in advertising, with work on high-profile brands such as the Gap, Smirnoff, Air France, Nike, Coca-Cola, and Adidas. His “Drugstore” ad for Levi’s jeans holds the word record for most awards won by a TV commercial, no less. Eternal Sunshine earned him an Academy Award for best original screenplay in 2005. He's finally being recognized for his pioneering technological work, including the first use in music video of Frame Morphing Zoom (Je danse le Mia by IAM), an effect subsequently taken up to great effect by the Wachowski in their Matrix films. His exploded universe, drawn from a child's fantasy-world of magic, dreams, and terror, has given us a treasure trove of cult pieces venerated by film buffs.

The discussion will take place in the intimate atmosphere of the Phi Centre and touch on Gondry’s career in all in all its manifestations—short and feature films, advertising, technology, and of course the Home Movie Factory. A hefty portion of the event will also be set aside for a discussion between Gondry and the audience. It all promises to be a chance for fans of the big and small screen to open up with one of the brashest, boldest, and most creative filmmakers on either side of the Atlantic.

Please note that the event will take place in French.

This event will be filmed, and webcast on a future date. A photographer will also be onsite.

*When buying a ticket for this event, enjoy a free entrance for the screening of the documentary L'épine dans le cœur, directed by Michel Gondry and presented at the Phi Centre on August 29.
