Joe Becker, one of Canada’s most mercurial painters, will be exhibiting his work at the Phi Centre from June 5th to the 22nd.The launch of his recent works will also coincide with the inauguration of the The 8 Day Week of Renata Morales, a friend of the artist.
Renowned for being on the fringe, Joe Becker is a unique figure in the art world with a sense of humour as equally original:
“The conceptual base of all my work pulls at the roots of some form humour.”
- Joe Becker
Born in 1978, Joe Becker graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design and currently lives and works in Montreal. Early on, Becker developed a passion for XVIIe Dutch and Flemish paintings and the techniques of the era. In the pure Flemish tradition, Joe Becker has become a virtuoso in the practice of tempera on panels and has developed a bestiary style recognized by thousands. His recent residency in Leipzig, frequented by contemporary master like Neo Rauch and Tilo Baumgartel, only further confirmed the demands this painter places on himself as he spends more than ten hours a day before his easel.
