The music of Oliver Coates is exploratory in nature, alternating between Romantic and Ambient, Classical and Braindance. His live performances are marked by an amplified cello, even visceral, interacting with computer environments to create unique sounds. Dubbing delays, distortions, synth patterns and long melodies manage to overwhelm the listener in an unsuspected sound environment.
The artist also mixes acoustic cello sets from his own folk music with minimalist drones. Fader magazine called him a "a music guru with Aphex Twin-level range and an ear for transferring the timeless into electronic music," while the Royal Philharmonic Society awarded him the breakthrough award for Young Artist 2011 for his “diverse and passionate performances” and for drawing in “a new classical audience.”
As a solo artist, he opened for Thom Yorke in Europe and the United States in 2018, as well as for Radiohead at Emirates Old Trafford in 2017. In 2017, he directs and orchestrates music for the Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel) show in Hamburg.
