The Grammy Award winning “Godfather of Noyze” has re-defined the art of beat boxing. Rahzel, formerly a member of hip hop’s cutting edge live band, The Roots, has perfectly mastered this quintessential musical art form and has emerged as a true virtuoso. The man we call a “human beatbox” is able to re-create full songs without instrumentation, sing a chorus and provide the musical melody simultaneously.
Rahzel recently bridged over into the art world by collaborating with the world-renowned electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and has been selected for a second time to perform a concert curated by Philip Glass at the Carnegie Hall with a line up of legendary artists such as Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed and Antony and the Johnsons.
Rahzel does not play an instrument, he is the instrument! Rahzel’s numerous recordings, collaborations and tours with artists such as Jay Z, Beck, Lou Reed, Bjork, Norah Jones, and 50 Cent.
As a member of the world famous Rock Steady Crew and partner with RAHZEL (the world's #1 beatboxer), JS-1 has toured the planet doing over 1,200 shows in more than 40 countries and hundreds of cities. Starting out in the late 80's and honing his craft through out the 90's, JS-1 has consistently been one of the hardest-working “djays” around. From his earlier tracks on the “Return of the DJ” series in the mid 90's, to his countless classic mixtapes, top-selling break records, several 12” singles, 6 full length solo albums, radio & tv appearances, and also touring with KRS-ONE for a while, DJ JS-1 has stayed relevant, very busy, and on top of the DJ game for years.
With a fine mixture of human warmth, originality and musical inspiration from all over the world, Random Recipe was able to slip away from the attribution of a specific music tag by opening their horizon and offering a playful journey around the globe. By doing so, the Montreal-based band easily flirts with folk, hip-hop, bossa-nova, electro, tri-hop, lullaby, jazz, kazoo and much more without ever losing their way.
Random Recipe, formed by Frannie Holder (vocals, chiquita guitarra), Fab (rap, beat-box), Vincent Legault (guitar, bass, keys) and Liu-Kong Ha (percussions, keys), has played in France, Iceland and Belgium as well as at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, SXSW in Austin (TX) and the Festival d'été de Québec, where they won the Miroir for the Best Canadian Artist prize.
The band also received the Étoiles Galaxie prize in 2011 (Bourse RIDEAU) and was nominated in three categories at the 2011 ADISQ Gala (Album of the year - Anglophone, Quebec artist of the year - Other languages and Album artwork of the year) for their album Fold It! Mold It!, released in September of 2010 in Canada through Bonsound and in January of 2012 in France via Chapter Two Records. The foursome is currently working on a second album, to be released this fall.
