In 2013, POP Montreal came aboard to guest curate the creative assembly of a series of  short films. Five local bands were paired with five local filmmakers. The goal?  Create five musical shorts for the Phi Centre as part of the collaborative initiative 5 x Phi. The entire project—from concept development to filming, editing and recording—was completed in just three weeks using the Phi Centre’s resources, which include film sets, recording studios, and editing suites.

"We chose these artists because we felt they were up for the challenge of working collaboratively with other like-minded teams and individuals in an experimental and daring way. We also felt they would be inspired by the full potential that the Phi Centre offers. In pairing the teams together we asked each artist to provide statements that we then shared with everyone. Each artist gave input on who they wanted to work with based on the information that everyone provided. Once we had everyone’s ideas, we tried matching people with the partners we felt would inspire their work and lead to the most fruitful collaborations. Like most artistic processes, there is tremendous potential but also quite a bit of mystery. We’re hoping everyone takes the leap with us and is inspired to create something memorable and unique!" - Dan Seligman, co-founder and Creative Director of POP Montreal

The result? A series of outstanding shorts showcasing a collaboration between Montreal's finest artists.

'MCMXCVI-MMXIII' is an original short film created by Philippe Léonard with music from Ruby Kato Attwood, John Ancheta and Alaska B of Yamantaka // Sonic Titan.

'Missed Connections' (taken from Montreal's Craigslist) is an original short film created by Ryan McKenna and Becca Blackwood with music from Freelove Fenner.

'A Man is Nothing' is an original short film created by Cedric Laurenty, with musician Ira Lee.
