Being creative is all about taking chances, being playful, and ready to fail in order to succeed. These ideas are at the heart of the Phi Centre's philosophy which is what attracted Yasiin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def) to do something he'd never done before under our roof.

Yasiin has always been a stand-up comedy fan. During the summer, he visited Montreal to hang out with good friend/comedy legend Dave Chapelle at the Just For Laughs Festival. Come fall, Yasiin was ready to give stand-up a try for himself, having only dabbled in the genre while hosting Def Jam events.

Over the span of two days, Yasiin took to the stage to make his stand-up debut. He charmed audiences with casual banter and playful jokes surrounding politics, hip-hop culture and more. It was inspiring to see an artist reputed to be one of the most influential hip-hop creators in the world–an artist who's mastered a particular realm in art– challenge himself in a new form.

Check out a clip from Yasiin's first stab at comedy.
